“Rubrics and criteria-based assessment online”

With formal assessment systems across Australia becoming more and more dependent upon ranking against agreed standards, the humble rubric or criteria sheet is steadily becoming more and more important to educators. While managing single task assessments is relatively straightforward, requiring no greater technology than a ruler, a pencil, and a photocopier, the challenge of supporting a framework of cumulative assessments on common criteria involves substantially increased complexity.

As a Navigator school, GWSC has been exploring for some time the possibility of developing an online rubric-tracking function, to help support the assessment of not only in-house Common Assessment Tasks, but also the Victorian Essential Learnings Standards. This presentation will look at some of the concerns and issues that we have experienced in planning the move from “Very Good Work, Samantha – 9/10” to an audible electronic mark-stream of criterion-based assessments.
